Workshop Overview
This immersive in-person workshop is designed as a comprehensive, hands-on exploration of 3D paper making and casting techniques. Over two structured sessions (6 hours each), participants will build a strong foundation in mold-making and paper casting before advancing to more complex techniques, including multi-part molds, natural fibers, and hybrid casting methods.
Through guided experimentation and material exploration, this workshop fosters a laboratory mindset, encouraging participants to push creative boundaries and develop their personal artistic language using paper as a sculptural medium.
Whether you are new to the practice or looking to refine your skills, this workshop provides the technical knowledge and creative space to transform paper into dynamic, three-dimensional forms.
Session 1: Foundations of Mold Making & Paper Casting
Understanding paper as a sculptural medium: historical and contemporary perspectives
Preparing and processing pulp from recycled materials
Exploring paper’s structural properties: flexibility, texture, and strength
Designing and crafting single-part molds using accessible materials
Techniques for replicating shapes, textures, and reliefs in paper
Hands-on experiments in fiber content, density, and translucency to control the final form
Session 2: Expanding Paper Casting & Experimentation
Comparing natural fibers vs. recycled paper: exploring differences in texture, strength, and finish
Layering methods for creating complex 3D reliefs and multi-layered structures
Developing surface treatments, coatings, and finishes to enhance durability
Creating multi-part molds for intricate paper sculptures
Experimenting with innovative casting techniques beyond traditional methods
Encouraging self-directed exploration and personal artistic development
Workshop Experience
This hands-on program provides both structured guidance and the freedom to explore personal artistic interests. Participants will work in a collaborative environment, sharing discoveries and exchanging ideas. The tactile experience of working with paper in a physical space allows for immediate feedback and adjustment, making the learning process dynamic and interactive.
Expect a mix of demonstrations, guided exercises, and independent experimentation. By the end of the workshop, you will have a series of molds and finished paper sculptures, along with the skills to continue your exploration beyond the classroom.
