Foundations workshop
Original Edition
The Groundwork of Paper Forms
At Your Own Pace | Download and Keep
Introduction
The Original Edition of our Foundations Workshop remains an important and valued part of Paper Lab Berlin.
Although we have expanded the program into the New Edition 2026, we chose to keep the Original Edition available as a more accessible and affordable way to enter our world of paper form-making. This workshop offers a strong and comprehensive foundation in the principles of 3D paper making and paper casting.
Through two in-depth recorded sessions, participants are introduced to the essential understanding of paper pulp, support layers, casting logic, and the unique relationship between cellulose and form. The Original Edition is ideal for those who prefer learning independently, at their own rhythm, while still receiving access to substantial content and practical knowledge developed through years of research, experimentation, and teaching.
The New Edition 2026 expands significantly on this original program, introducing new research, advanced techniques, paper making from fabrics, and ongoing feedback support. At the same time, the Original Edition remains a highly relevant and valuable workshop, especially for participants seeking a focused, self-paced introduction to the foundations of paper form-making.

Time to Give
A Special Edition
Before launching the New Edition of Foundations, we introduced a special transitional version called Time to Give.
For six months, we expanded the Original Foundations Workshop by adding an additional bonus volume while keeping the workshop at its original price. We decided to preserve this expanded version as part of our downloadable offering, making it available to participants who seek strong foundational learning at a more accessible
Bonus Volume Included
Advanced Paper Casting:
Copy & Paste
As part of the Time to Give edition, this workshop includes an additional bonus volume dedicated to advanced paper casting.
In this session, we explore how casting can be used not only as a method of replication, but also as a way to investigate repetition, surface memory, and the possibility of generating multiple forms from a single support layer. This bonus volume expands the practical and conceptual understanding of casting, offering deeper insight into the broader potential of paper form-making.
What You Will Learn
Across Volume 1 & Volume 2, you will explore:
• Introduction to paper as a sculptural material
• The relationship between paper, cellulose, and form
• Paper making from multiple materials and fibers
• Pulp preparation and material behavior
• Mold creation and support layers
• 3D paper form-making and relief building
• Paper casting techniques and methodologies
• Paper additives and expanded material possibilities
• Drying, shrinkage, troubleshooting, and problem solving
Bonus Volume — Advanced Paper Casting: Copy & Paste
The bonus volume expands the workshop into more advanced casting approaches, exploring replication, repetition, surface memory, and the generation of multiple forms from a single support layer. This session offers both practical demonstrations and conceptual insight into the broader potential of paper casting.
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is designed for a wide range of participants — from complete beginners to experienced practitioners seeking to expand their material vocabulary.
It is suitable for artists, makers, designers, educators, sculptors, installation artists, textile practitioners, and anyone curious about working with paper as a sculptural medium.
No previous experience in paper making or casting is required. Whether you are taking your first steps or looking to deepen an existing practice, the workshop offers both technical foundations and conceptual insight to support your development.
Support & Community
Although this is an At Your Own Pace workshop, your learning experience does not end with the downloadable materials.
Participants of the Original Edition are welcome to remain connected to the Paper Lab Berlin community through our ongoing support spaces. You are invited to join Paper Talk Pro, our monthly online support session dedicated to technical questions, material challenges, process discussions, and feedback.
This creates an opportunity to ask questions as your work develops, receive guidance when needed, and continue learning beyond the workshop itself.
If you are new to Paper Lab Berlin and would like to understand our philosophy, teaching approach, and wider program more deeply, you are also welcome to join Paper Talk — Introduction to Paper Lab Berlin, our open monthly session introducing the platform, its activities, and the values that shape our work.
