Paper Making | Mold Making | Paper Casting
In April 2026, we will hold the final iteration of the current live version of this workshop. This will be the last opportunity to experience the workshop in its existing format.
As a special addition, this final live session will include a bonus two-and-a-half-hour segment focusing on advanced mold-making techniques providing participants with two live sessions plus this extra.
After April, this version will only be available as an at-your-own-pace program, as we transition into the new expanded structure of the Foundations Workshop. We warmly invite past participants who wish to join us one last time in this live format to take part in this special closing chapter.
Our 3D Paper Making Workshop is both a unique research field at Paper Lab Berlin and the most sought-after program on our platform. It stands at the core of our practice, where experiment and pedagogy meet, and where participants encounter paper not as a neutral sheet but as a medium of form, relief, and topography.
This workshop unfolds in three interconnected volumes. It begins with paper making, expanded beyond convention into a vast field of materials and concepts—fibers, plants, fabrics, and fragments transformed into new surfaces. From there it moves to mold making for paper, capturing impressions and topographies from almost any material, holding the memory of surfaces and preserving their relief. The final movement is paper casting, where those molds serve as matrices of replication, vessels for infinite copy and variation, turning paper from a flat skin into volume and sculptural presence.
The workshop may be joined live online in direct dialogue with Guy Lougashi and the Paper Lab community, or followed at one’s own rhythm through a recorded program that remains accessible without limit. Each participant also receives a dedicated edition eBook authored by Lougashi, gathering and expanding on every aspect of the workshop.
Paper Lab Berlin is the pioneering lab in this field of topographic paper and shape-making, committed to sustaining a space where material, labor, and concept converge. Here, paper becomes more than matter: it becomes a method of mapping, preserving, and reshaping the fragile geographies of surface and form.

The Groundwork of Paper Forms
From Pulp to Form — Foundations in 3D Paper Making
Making — Forming — Shaping
Live Online / At Your Own Pace Program
Paper Lab Berlin
Led by Guy Lougashi
This workshop is the most established and continuously developed field of research at Paper Lab Berlin. It stands at the core of our practice and defines the DNA of our approach to paper as structure, surface, and topography.
At Paper Lab Berlin, paper is not approached as a fixed material, but as a medium. It can be constructed from fibers, from cellulose, and from a wide range of sources including natural, recycled, synthetic, and alternative materials. Because of this, paper is understood as something that is built and defined through process, rather than something given.
The workshop is grounded in what we define as a lab state of mind. This means working through experimentation, precision, and direct engagement with the material. The goal is not only to learn techniques, but to develop a structured toolbox that allows participants to work with paper and mold making in a controlled and informed way. Through this, participants learn how to make decisions, how to adjust processes, and how to understand the behavior of the material in relation to form.
A central aspect of the workshop is the understanding of paper as a surface that behaves similarly to skin. It is made of fibers that form layers, and these layers carry marks, pressure, and structural information. Paper holds topography; it records the conditions under which it is formed and retains the memory of the surfaces and structures it comes into contact with.
The methodology presented in this workshop has been developed over many years by Guy Lougashi through continuous research, teaching, and practice. Paper Lab Berlin is the leading and only platform dedicated to this specific approach to three-dimensional paper making and mold-based paper forming, where pulp is treated as a structural and spatial medium.
Workshop Structure
This is not a traditional paper-making workshop focused on producing flat sheets of paper. Instead, the workshop focuses on working with paper as a medium for constructing structures, surfaces, textures, and three-dimensional forms.
The program is divided into three main areas: making, forming, and casting.
Making focuses on the creation of pulp. Participants learn how to produce pulp from a wide range of sources, including plant-based fibers, recycled materials, fabrics (both natural and synthetic), and alternative materials. Each source produces different structural and visual qualities, and the aim is to understand pulp as a variable medium that can be adjusted and developed according to the needs of the work.
Forming is the core of the workshop. Paper requires a support structure in order to take form during the drying process. Through extensive research, methods have been developed that allow almost any material to be used as a mold. Participants learn how to construct molds from everyday materials, how to build forming systems with precision, and how to work with advanced mold-making materials such as silicone. This part of the workshop focuses on translating surfaces, textures, and structures into paper, moving beyond replication toward the construction of form.
Casting brings the process together. There are multiple ways to introduce pulp into a mold, and each method produces different results. Participants explore how casting techniques affect thickness, density, surface quality, and structural strength. This stage connects material preparation and form-building into a complete and controlled process.
Approach and Participation
The workshop is open to participants at all levels, including those with no prior experience. It begins with fundamental principles and progresses toward more complex methods, allowing for a clear and structured learning process.
The focus throughout the workshop is on developing understanding rather than reproducing predefined results. Participants are encouraged to work through experimentation and to build their own approach based on the knowledge and tools acquired during the program.
Closing
The workshop is based on a simple structure, but the knowledge within it is precise and developed through long-term research. It provides participants with a clear framework for working with paper as a medium for structure and form, and with the tools to continue exploring it independently.
Starting in June 2026, this workshop will officially expand into a comprehensive program that blends both live sessions and at-your-own-pace learning. We will grow from the current two-session format to a four-session series—delivered once weekly. The expanded structure will include the newly revised Foundations Workshop, but it will also integrate volumes from our Advanced Mold-Making series.
Participants will learn how to work with silicone and other specialized mold-making materials—an area we uniquely pioneer with paper.
In addition, we’ll introduce a volume on papermaking with fabrics, broadening the range of materials.
Beyond that, we’ll explore working with clay, wax, and other creative mediums. This evolution will allow even more time for experimentation, creativity, and in-depth research, enriching every participant’s journey.
