About the Masterclass

In the upcoming Paper Lab masterclass, Tracing Cycles, artist Ana Pireva opens up the philosophy and core mechanics of her artistic practice. Her work unfolds through continuous cycles in which images and surfaces are created, marked, broken down, and reinvented. Connecting the ancient human urge to leave a trace with the physical realities of the studio, Ana approaches paper not as a passive surface, but as a living skin that records every stage of its transformation.

While her broader practice spans auto-oxidation with iron-gall inks, pulp painting, and traditional printmaking, this masterclass focuses on what Ana describes as the second cycle of her process: using paper itself as a printing matrix. Through this approach, she explores how fragile paper matrices deform, fatigue, and transform under the pressure of the printing press.

Rather than pursuing identical reproductions or perfect editions, Ana embraces the unexpected qualities of the monotype, allowing material resistance, imperfections, and unpredictable transformations to become essential elements of the image. New imagery becomes embedded in surfaces that already carry the memory of their previous lives.

Throughout the masterclass, participants will encounter different techniques, methods, and artistic approaches through which Ana investigates traces, repetition, and material transformation, gaining insight into the relationship between her conceptual research and practical processes.

In Ana's work, paper becomes both a record and an active participant in the creative process. The printing matrix carries the evidence of its own physical decay, while broken fibers, pressure, and repeated interventions generate new images. Each transformation leaves an indelible trace, turning paper into a living document of time, presence, and change.

About Ana

Ana Pireva (born 1995 in Shumen, Bulgaria) is a visual artist based in Dresden, Germany, whose practice explores the relationships between material, memory, identity, and transformation.

Working primarily with paper, drawing, stone lithography, papermaking, and self-made iron-gall inks, she investigates how matter carries traces and how personal and collective histories emerge through artistic processes.

At the center of Ana's artistic research is a deep engagement with the physical qualities of paper—its fragility, resilience, and capacity for change. She accompanies her works from the production and transformation of their materials through artistic intervention and their development into series, allowing each stage of the process to contribute to the final image.

Her practice brings together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic inquiry. Through artifacts, memories, and cultural inheritances, she explores the connections between humans, objects, and history, creating spaces where personal and collective narratives intersect across generations, languages, and cultures.

Ana completed her Fine Arts diploma in 2021 and her Meisterschüler studies in 2024 at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Ralf Kerbach. She is also a co-founder of erlenwerk, a Dresden-based workshop dedicated to traditional printmaking and papercraft.

Alongside her artistic practice, Ana works as a guest lecturer in drawing, traditional printmaking, and papermaking at educational institutions in Germany and internationally. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and beyond, and she has received several artistic scholarships and awards, including recognition at the AMATERAS International Paper Art Competition in Sofia.
