Papier Mâché - volume #01

November’s Master Class

Papier Mâché - volume #01/ November 2024

Welcome to the first installment of the Paper Lab Berlin online masterclass series. This session is dedicated to the versatile and transformative art of Paper mâché -a technique that dates back centuries and has been used by various cultures for both decorative and practical purposes. While today it is often associated with simple crafts, paper mâché is an artistic method rich with possibilities for experimentation and creative expression.

Papier Mâché - volume #02

December’s Master Class

Papier Mâché – Volume #02 / December 2024

In the second installment of the Paper Lab Berlin online masterclass series, we dive deeper into the dynamic world of Papier Mâché. Building on the foundations laid in Volume #01, this session explores more advanced techniques and creative applications. Papier Mâché is not just a medium for crafting; it is a way to manipulate form, texture, and space in powerful and unexpected ways.

During this masterclass, participants explored how to push the boundaries of traditional Papier Mâché by experimenting with texture, layering, and incorporating mixed materials to create rich, multifaceted sculptures. From sculptural forms to intricate textures, this session opened up new avenues for personal expression and artistic exploration within the medium.

Weaving paper

January’s Master Class

Weaving Paper / January 2025

In this third installment of the Paper Lab Berlin online masterclass series, we explored the art of weaving with paper. This session centered on the intricate process of interlacing fibers to create dynamic textures and structures. Weaving, a technique often associated with traditional crafts, is reimagined in this masterclass by incorporating paper as both a material and a medium for creative expression.

Participants learned how to manipulate paper fibers into delicate yet resilient woven forms, pushing the limits of texture, structure, and pattern. From creating wall hangings to sculptural objects, this session emphasized the versatility of paper as a medium and its potential for transformation through the technique of weaving.

Paper Installations – Volume #01

February’s Master Class

Paper Installations – Volume #01 / Febraury 2025

The first volume of the Paper Lab Berlin online masterclass series in Paper Installation focused on the foundational principles of creating three-dimensional paper installations. In this session, we explored the unique ability of paper to transcend its flat nature and become a medium for spatial exploration and transformation.

Participants learned how to design and construct immersive installations using paper as both a structural and aesthetic element. The masterclass emphasized the importance of understanding space, form, and the interaction between light and shadow, while experimenting with layering, folding, and cutting techniques to shape dynamic, sculptural compositions.

This session laid the groundwork for further experimentation with paper as a medium that can be manipulated to alter our perception of space, creating works that challenge the boundaries between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional.

Papermaking from Fabrics

March’s Master Class

Papermaking from Fabrics / March 2025

In this session, Paper Lab Berlin’s online masterclass series introduced the art of papermaking from fabrics, exploring the fascinating process of transforming textiles into paper pulp. Participants discovered how fabrics, often overlooked in papermaking, can be broken down into fibers to create rich, textured sheets that carry both the history of the material and the potential for new artistic expressions.

This masterclass focused on the hands-on process of extracting fibers from fabrics, blending them into pulp, and forming them into sheets. Participants also explored how to experiment with various types of fabric, from natural fibers to synthetic, to achieve different textures, weights, and qualities in their paper creations.

The session highlighted the connection between fabric and paper as both materials and metaphors—layers of history, identity, and the tactile nature of creation.

Paper Installation – Volume #02

April’s Master Class

Paper Installation – Volume #02 / April’s 2025

Screens and Depth

In this second volume of our Paper Installation masterclass series, we dive deeper into the concept of spatial layering, focusing on how to create depth and dimension using paper structures. This session builds on the foundational techniques explored in Volume #01, but takes the practice further by incorporating the use of screens and layered compositions to create immersive, multi-dimensional environments.

Participants learned how to manipulate paper not just as a material, but as a way to shape and define space. By introducing screens and layering techniques, this masterclass emphasized how the interplay between light, shadow, and the transparency of paper can transform a simple installation into a rich, dynamic experience. Through these explorations, we pushed the boundaries of paper as a medium capable of both subtlety and boldness, opening up new ways of thinking about depth and spatial presence.

Wax and Paper – Vol 1

June’s Master Class

Wax and Paper – Vol 1

Exploring the Intersection of Materiality

In this June masterclass, we explore the rich relationship between wax and paper—two materials that are deeply intertwined with symbolism, history, and transformation. Both possess a unique tactile quality that offers endless possibilities for creative exploration.

We will delve into the role of wax in various paper-based practices, including collage, installation, paper casting, and mold-making. Participants will learn how wax can be used not only as a surface treatment but also as a structural element, adding depth, texture, and resilience to their work. This masterclass will examine how these two materials can transform, shape, and enhance one another, allowing for new dimensions in the creation of both sculptural and two-dimensional works.

Paper Installation – Volume #03

June’s Master Class

Paper Installation – Volume #03 / June 2025

Threads & Paper

In June’s masterclass, we continue our journey into paper installations with Volume #03, focusing on the dynamic intersection of threads and paper. This session explores how the delicate nature of paper can be strengthened and transformed through the integration of threads, creating intricate, textured compositions that play with both structure and fluidity.

Participants will learn how to incorporate threads as both a structural and decorative element within paper installations, exploring the ways in which stitching, binding, and weaving can add new dimensions to their work. Whether used to create tension, connection, or movement, threads will serve as a tool to elevate paper, offering new ways to explore the relationship between surface and space. This masterclass is an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of your paper practice, combining tactile materials in innovative ways to create powerful, engaging works.
